Mrs. Joyce Marlene Merchant, age 60, passed away Saturday, August 5, 2017. She was born August 16, 1956 in Pensacola, Florida to Jesse and Joyce Faye Paulk McGowan. Mrs. Merchant was a lifelong resident of Ponce De Leon. She was Baptist by faith and a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church. She graduated from Ponce De Leon High School in 1974, she also attended Riley Business College in Dothan, Alabama. She was a devoted mother, sister, aunt and friend. She was a very talented softball player, having received the most Valuable Player Award in the Southeast Region Women's Slow Pitch league in 1989.

Mrs. Merchant was preceded in death by her father, Jesse McGowan; and nephew James Cory McGowan and her maternal grandmother Minnie Lou Paulk.

Mrs. Merchant is survived by her mother, Joyce Faye McGowan of Ponce De Leon, Florida; one son, Erik Reginald Merchant of Lakeland, Florida; one brother, Reverend Larry McGowan and wife Pam of Ponce De Leon, Florida; one sister, Sharon Gavin of Panama City, Florida, also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

A time of visitation was held at 12:00to 2:00 PM, Monday, August 7, 2017 at Oak Grove Baptist Church; 2610 Oak Grove Road, Ponce De Leon, Florida 32455. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM, Monday, August 7, 2017 at Oak Grove Baptist Church, with Reverends Larry McGowan and Chris Carroll officiating. Pallbearers will be Shane McGowan, Josh McGowan, Dale Powell, Devin Locke, Jesse Gavin, Craig Gavin and Brandy Raybon. Flowers are being accepted. Burial followed in the New Ponce De Leon Cemetery.
