Diahann Carroll was the groundbreaking actress and singer whose 1968 TV show “Julia” was the first to portray a black woman with a professional career. She starred in notable films including “Carmen Jones” and “Porgy and Bess,” and she became the first black women to win a Tony Award, for her role in “No Strings.”
