Mary Lee (Birge) Mitchell, age 99 of Chipley passed from this life into the presence of her Lord on Sunday, May 17, 2020.

Born on August 6, 1920 in Holmes County to the late William Wesley and Arkie (Faircloth) Birge, she was preceded in death by her six brothers: Herbert, Coy, Huston, Milton, Doug, and one sister: Nettie Birge.

She was a life-long member of Galilee United Methodist Church of Graceville, Florida and lived most of her life in the panhandle of Florida where she worked many years as a cashier for Mr. Carl Young at the Piggly Wiggly in Chipley.

Mrs. Mitchell married the late Robert Cecil Mitchell in 1938 and together they raised seven children. Besides her parents, siblings, and husband, she was preceded in death by three of her children: John Mitchell, Ann Scroggins, Edward Mitchell, and grandson Glenn Peel.

She is survived by daughters: Mary Nell Rustin (Kenneth), Martha Crawford (Lavon); sons: Buddy Mitchell and Wayne Mitchell (Sharon); son-in-law: Charlie Scroggins; daughters-in-law: Ann Mitchell and Gloria Mitchell. Also surviving Mrs. Mitchell are thirteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Granny Mitchell, as she was known by so many, loved her family and enjoyed "family" gatherings. She was also an avid gardener, loved sewing, quilting and working in her yard.

A graveside service was held at Glenwood Cemetery in Chipley, Florida at 10AM on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 with Pastor Dallas Pettis officiating. Obert Funeral Home of Chipley in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emerald Coast Hospice who provided loving care and support.

It was my loss not to have met Mrs. Mitchell, but I feel as of I did, for she left a splendid legacy through the lives of her children, Buddy and Mary Nell, and I am sure the others are similarly grand people and good friends.
